Holistic Child Play Therapy at Rooted Rhythm
Helping Sensitive, Gifted, and Emotional Children Heal Through Play
At Rooted Rhythm, we specialize in supporting highly sensitive, emotionally intense, and gifted children who are navigating anxiety, anger, sadness, and other big feelings.
Our therapists use evidence-based play therapy techniques that allow children to express themselves in developmentally appropriate ways, especially when words fall short.
Why Play Therapy?
Children communicate through play.
Our therapy sessions create a safe space where your child can explore their emotions, process life events, and build the emotional resilience needed to thrive.
Whether your child is dealing with anxiety, trauma, behavioral challenges, or adjustment difficulties, our play therapy model meets them exactly where they are.
Our 12-Week Child Therapy & Parent Coaching Program
Unlike traditional therapy models that often continue indefinitely, Rooted Rhythm offers a structured 12-week therapy process designed to foster meaningful progress within a clear and supportive timeline.
The Program Includes:
1. Parent Orientation
After an initial free consultation, we schedule a 50-minute intake session with parents only. This is your opportunity to share your child’s story, ask questions, and learn more about our therapeutic approach. For separated or divorced parents, we recommend separate 50-minute sessions.
2. Weekly (or Biweekly) Play Therapy Sessions for Your Child
Over the course of 12 weeks, your child will meet in-person weekly with a Rooted Rhythm therapist for 50-minute sessions. The final 10 minutes of each session are dedicated to parent updates, coaching, and insights.
3. Parenting Support
Throughout your child’s therapeutic journey, we offer multiple ways for parents to grow alongside their child:
Free access to our TUNED IN Parenting Course
Free optional 20min parent check-in calls with our lead parent coach, Sophie Schauermann
Individual parent coaching sessions as needed at an additional cost
4. Parent Closing Session & Ongoing Support
At the end of the 12 weeks, we hold a 50-minute session with parents to review your child’s progress, celebrate growth, and create a sustainable plan moving forward.
Families who complete our 12-week process become part of the Rooted Rhythm community. If families decide to continue therapy after the 12 week process, we are happy to continue seeing your child for as long as needed.
What Makes Our Approach Different
Close Collaboration with Parents:
We believe parents are the most important part of a child’s healing process. We help you understand your child’s emotional world and strengthen your connection.
Holistic, Whole-Child Care:
We treat beyond the diagnosis, addressing the root causes of behavior and emotional distress.
Trauma-Informed Play Therapy:
Our therapists are trained to gently support children in processing traumatic experiences.
Specialists in Sensitivity:
We deeply understand the needs of highly sensitive children and gifted children who experience the world with heightened emotion, awareness, and intensity.
School Support:
If necessary for treatment, we work closely with schools to help bridge the gap between home, therapy, and the classroom. Our therapists provide insights and support to teachers and school counselors to ensure that your child’s emotional needs are understood and met across environments.
Specialized Assessments:
Our program includes in-depth emotional and behavioral assessments to better understand your child’s needs. Tools such as the CBCL (Child Behavior Checklist) help us track progress and guide treatment.
Highly Trained Providers:
Our therapists receive advanced training to stay on the cutting edge of child therapy and sensitive child care.
What We Can Help With:
Anxiety • Emotional Outbursts • Adoption • Trauma • Sensory Sensitivities • Grief • Divorce • Behavioral Issues • Attention Difficulties • Depression • Oppositional Defiance • Self-Esteem • Parent-Child Conflict • Social Struggles • And More
Child Therapy FAQs

Anyone can benefit from play therapy! We specialize in helping kiddos ages 2-12, but we also incorporate play therapy methods with teens when appropriate. Having the option of play therapy gives us another communication tool that helps our clients feel understood.

Yes, play therapy absolutely works! A number of studies have shown that play therapy is effective in treating depression, anxiety, aggressive or destructive behavior. It's also been shown to improve self-control, social skills, and more.
As play therapists ourselves, we've seen how impactful this approach can be with kids and teens alike. If you're not sure whether it's the right fit for your family, we invite you to get in touch.

We love working with teens!
Since teens are at a different developmental stage than younger children, there are some key distinctions in our approach to teen therapy. Here are some of the main differences in our process.
Less involvement in the therapy process. Teens are in the process of developing a stronger sense of identity, which involves creating more independence from their families. While we update parents when necessary and encourage teens to involve parents as they wish, we generally focus on developing a strong, trusting one-on-one relationship with your teen.
A consensual agreement. In order for our work to be effective, we require the teens we work with to choose to engage in therapy themselves. We believe that therapy should be a safe space for teens to express themselves, gain insight, and get support—not feel forced or coerced.
Parenting support. Parenting teens can be both rewarding and challenging. We encourage parents to engage in their own therapeutic work alongside their teen, either through our TUNED IN course, parent coaching sessions, or individual therapy.
Varying lengths of time in therapy. Unlike our structured twelve-session approach with younger children, our teens spend varying lengths of time in therapy. We recommend eight weeks of weekly sessions to get started, though many teens often benefit from longer-term mental health care.

For most families, we have found that 12 weeks is the perfect amount of time for big changes to be made, and if you feel it necessary to have ongoing support beyond that, we are more than happy to support your child long term!

Both child psychologists and child therapists can provide invaluable support to children and families. However, there are some slight differences to be aware of when choosing who you want to work with.
A child therapist has a master's degree (usually in marriage and family therapy, social work, or another related field) and thousands of hours of supervised practice before gaining licensure. A child psychologist has similar training, though they have a doctorate degree in psychology.
Sometimes, child psychologists focus more on research or psychological testing. If you're seeking testing for autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, or developmental disabilities, you may want to consider seeing a child psychologist. Otherwise, it's important to make sure that a therapist or psychologist's treatment approach and specialties align with your child's specific needs.
